University of Galway project aims to use AI to improve blood pressure treatment

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A new research project at University of Galway is aiming to use AI to improve treatment for high blood pressure.

Dr. Conor Judge has received funding of €700 thousand from the Health Research Board for the ambitious project.

At present, people with the condition have to regularly visit their doctor, placing strain on both the patient and the healthcare system.

Dr Judge's four-year project will now look to artificial intelligence - and attempt to train a computer program to make decisions similar to hypertension experts.

Initially, it'll begin by analyzing two extensive clinical trials on blood pressure.

Then, safety features will be integrated into the AI program, to ensure reliable recommendations, particularly in unfamiliar medical scenarios.

The project will also carry out extensive and thorough surveys with clinicans and patients to gauge their perceptions of AI-driven treatment.

The final step will be a thorough evaluation of the AI program's ability to effectively recommend blood pressure treatments in a real world setting.
