UHG still dealing with significant overcrowding and high rates of COVID-19

Galway Bay fm newsroom - UHG is still struggling with significant overcrowding and high rates of COVID-19 today, as the head of the HSE says he’s nervous about how hospitals will cope in the coming months.

There are currently 39 patients with the virus at UHG - the 2nd highest figure nationwide, and a reduction of a single patient since yesterday.

It comes as the hospital is also combating significant overcrowding over the past week, with 42 people waiting for a bed today.

Latest figures show nationally, 457 people are in hospital with Covid-19, of whom 88 are in ICU.

With COVID restrictions set to ease considerably today with the reopening of the nightlife sector, and full capacity at weddings and sports events, there are concerns about the potential impact on hospitals.

HSE chief Paul Reid says the coming months will be tough on the health system.
