Galway Bay fm newsroom - The HSE is assuring Galway cancer patients that UHG and Portiuncula Hospitals are not affected by the current shortage in chemotherapy drugs.
Treatment for some cancer patients across Ireland has been delayed by up to a week because some hospitals are running out.
Several facilities are reporting problems after they were left short by a pharmaceutical company over the last fortnight.
Baxter Healthcare, the only firm supplying the compound drugs, has failed to deliver a full supply for Ireland.
However, in a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the HSE says UHG has its own on-site drug compounding facility, and is therefore not affected.
At Portiuncula, the executive has sourced an alternative supplier for the treatments.
Consultant Oncologist at St Vincent's Hospital, John Crown, says the company responsible for the nationwide shortage should be penalised.
