Galway Bay fm newsroom - UHG was one of the most overcrowded hospitals nationwide during the month of April.
Data recording trolley figures for the period show that 410 patients were waiting on a bed at the Newcastle hospital during the period.
However the data, collated by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, shows the number has dropped by 30 percent when compared to April 2016, when 587 were waiting on trolleys.
The study shows 73 patients were waiting on trolleys in Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe last month, up from 18 in April 2016.
The over-crowding issue is among the items being debated at the INMO annual delegate conference which opens later in Wexford.
INMO General Secretary Liam Doran says over-crowding is putting patients at risk.
