Galway Bay fm newsroom - Two Galway primary schools have the most overcrowded classrooms in the entire country.
Scoil Náisiúnta Róis at Taylors Hill and Bun-scoil Phádraig Naofa in Tuam both have classrooms of 42 pupils - double the European average.
However, Galway has an average of 23.5 pupils per classroom, which is one of the better figures nationwide.
While there's no set limit on primary school classroom sizes, the Department of Education recommends no more than 25 pupils per teacher.
Almost 20 per cent of pupils are in classes which could be considered overcrowded.
The biggest class size in primary education was 42, which was recorded in three schools - two in Galway and one in Donegal.
The school with the highest average class size in the country was Scoil Mobhi in Glasnevin, Dublin - which has an average of 31.9 students across 8 classrooms.
The county with the highest average was Meath, which has an average of 25.6 students per classroom.
