Galway Bay fm newsroom - Two of the longest established rural credit unions in the country - both located in Connemara - are in the final stages of an amalgamation process.
A special general meeting of the Cashel Credit Union has been called in order to vote on a provisional agreement to link up with Tullycross Credit Union.
Between them the Tullycross Credit Union and the Cashel Credit Union have given almost one hundred years service in west Connemara.
The Cashel branch is fifty years in existence and Tullycross followed shortly afterwards.
They were ground breaking rural initiatives at the time, however the Credit Union landscape has changed over the decades and branches are being urged to form bigger and stronger units.
The new entity will be called the Connemara Credit Union with its head offices in Clifden and branch offices in Tullycross, Cashel and Carna.
