Galway Bay fm newsroom - Plans for a large solar farm in Tuam have encountered a setback after the proposal has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.

The project is led by Tuam Energy Park Ltd and would be located at Cloontoa, Rinkippeen, Cloonascragh, Barnacurragh and Ballykeaghra.

The plan secured permission from Galway County Council at the end of April subject to a list of 16 conditions.

One had stated the permission is for a period of 25 years from the commissioning of the solar array.

Another condition stated the permission is not to be construed as any form of consent or agreement to a connection to the national grid or to the routing or nature of any such connection.

The third party appeal has been lodged with concerns including fears over the potential for increased flooding in land in the area at times of heavy rainfall - due to the River Suileen having a shallow basin at certain locations.

Others concerns raised include the impact the development would have on the Tuam outer bypass and its proximity to the northern part of the proposed development.

An Bord Pleanála is due to issue its decision in September.
