Tuam councillors decline to remove confederate plaque

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Tuam area councillors have decided not to remove a plaque honouring local man Richard 'Dick' Dowling who fought in the Confederate Army

At this week's meeting Councillor Shaun Cunniffe raised the issue of removing the plaque after the recent violence in Charlottesville.

Milltown native Dowling left Ireland for the US in 1846 and fought as a Major in the Confederate Army, preventing an invasion of Texas in 1863.

Councillor Donagh Killilea says it was decided to leave the plaque in place until there is a local museum it can be moved to.

Councillor Killilea says that the plaque honouring Richard 'Dick' Dowling is not just related to his service as a Confederate soldier.
