Galway Bay fm newsroom - Traffic across the the city is extremely heavy this afternoon as a result on ongoing roadworks, and road closures for a state funeral.
Works got underway at Mary Street on Monday, but today, the 9am to 5pm lane closure in the area is leading to significant congestion in the city centre.
The situation is set to be compounded in the coming hours by a state funeral taking place on the east side of the city this afternoon.
Road closures are currently in place at the Dublin Road.
A State funeral is taking place in the city for a distinguished army sergeant who was part of An Chéad Chath at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Renmore.
Lurgan Park resident Steven McColgan, who's originally from Malin in Co Donegal, completed four tours of duty overseas during his 17 year career.
Sergeant Steven McColgan joined the Defence Forces in November 1999 and served in Lebanon, Kosovo and Chad.
His funeral mass is ending around now at St Oliver Plunkett Church Renmore.
The army band will shortly lead a military procession to his final resting place at Bohermore cemetery.
Gardaí say motorists should expect severe traffic disruptions on the Dublin Road and towards Bohermore, due to rolling closures.
