Galway Bay fm newsroom - Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the government have been urged to reconsider the provision of a bypass for Claregalway as a matter of urgency.
The call was made by councillor James Charity at this week's meeting in County Hall where plans for a traffic calming scheme for the area were approved.
This will see a range of elements including footpaths, pedestrian crossings and cycling facilities.
The meeting heard a key part of the principal upgrade will be focused on surface water drainage and road drainage.
It's hoped work on the scheme will begin in the fourth quarter of next year.
Independent councillor Charity claims over 18 thousand vehicles pass through Claregalway on a daily basis.
He says the M17 has not resolved the area's traffic congestion issues and a bypass needs to be seriously considered - for more on this story tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour...
