Galway Bay fm newsroom - A city councillor has written to the Taoiseach, who is also the Minister for Defence, asking that he explore the possibility of providing accommodation for soldiers' families at the barracks in Renmore.
Councillor Mike Cubbard says that many young soldiers with young families are under extreme pressure for housing.
The Independent councillor says new entrants to the Defence Forces, do not receive substantial wages and often can't afford expensive rents or find landlords who are part of the Housing Assistance Programme, HAP.
Councillor Cubbard says accommodation is provided at army bases such as The Curragh, so the same should be provided at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Renmore.
Meanwhile, Members of the Wives & Partners of the Defence Forces group will hold a peaceful protest at Renmore barracks this afternoon.
It's part of a nationwide series of protests outside barracks and bases across the country.
The campaigners claim the Defence Forces are not afforded the same access to workplace relations procedures as other public sectors.
The protest will take place at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa from 12 until 2 this afternoon.
