Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Taoiseach has congratulated A Corrandulla woman who this evening completed a swim across the channel.
33 year old Deirdre Newell set off from Dover at 1am this morning and arrived at the French coastline shortly before 5pm.
Ms. Newell is a Captain in the Defence Forces based at Cathal Brugha Barracks and has completed several overseas tours in Lebanon and Syria.
In a tweet, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said "Congratulations to Deirdre Newell, Army Captain from Galway who just successfully swam the English Channel. Amazing feat of physical fitness and resolve".
Galway West Independent TD Noel Grealish says it's a 'remarkable' achievement and Captain Newell has done her county proud.
Her support team for the channel crossing included Galway-native and renowned adventurer Gavin Hennigan.
