Student accommodation rates rise by 4 percent at NUI Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Every college in the country has hiked its student accommodation fees for the upcoming term - including NUI Galway.

At Goldcrest, a double bed ensuite room now costs €6,675 per semester, while the same setup at Corrib village costs alost €5,875.

The cheapest option is a shared twin bed room at Corrib Village, which will set students back €3,630 per term.

The rates represent an increase of 4 percent since last year.

A survey for the Irish Independent has found rents at every college in the country have increased.

Compared to last year, the cost of staying at University College Cork has risen the most.

Management are blaming the 11.5% increase on refurbishment works.

Roebuck Castle at UCD is the most expensive student accommodation, costing more than € 11,500.

One expert has suggested colleges don't have enough funding, and are using student accommodation to make money.

Students are being warned the price of accommodation is likely to rise further.
