Strong attendance at fifth day of Galway Races at Ballybrit

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Attendance held steady at the fifth day of the Galway Racing Festival in Ballybrit yesterday - while tote betting was once again down.

Over 30, 800 people passed through the turnstiles yesterday, an increase of several hundred on the figure for 2018.

TOTE betting at the racecourse yesterday was 731 thousand euro; once again, a considerable drop on the figure of 900 thousand taken last year.

However, despite the drop in TOTE spending, it was another good day for bookmakers - with more than €1.4m in placed bets during the day.

That compares to just over €1.2m taken on the same day in 2018.

Attendance was also up slightly - with 30,800 people passing through the turnstiles yesterday, up from 30,100 last year.

The big winner of the day - The Guinness Handicap - was 'Mr. Adjudicator', trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Kevin Manning.

Today is the first weekend meet of this years Racing Festival - with the first race set to go to post at 2 this afternoon.
