Storm Darragh Update

Storm Darragh has caused major disruption to travel and power services in the county since making landfall last night.

Many roads across the county are impassable this morning.

Council and ESB crews have begun clear up operations.

Galway County Council are advising the public NOT to remove trees by themselves as power lines could be wrapped up in them.

Galway County Council has an interactive map of the road closures….

It can be found here...

STATEMENT FROM GALWAY COUNTY COUNCIL

Storm Darragh passed across Ireland overnight, bringing with it destructive winds and triggering a Red Weather Warning for Galway from 9pm yesterday until 2am this morning.

Galway County Council met this morning at 9am and respective local areas reported impacts on the ground.

The aftermath of the storm has left a significant number of trees uprooted, causing widespread road closures across the county. Major routes impacted include:

· N59 is closed just west of Oughterard

· N65 is blocked between Killimor and Portumna

· N83 on the city side of Corinthians is closed

· N84 at Corrandulla Cross closed

· N63 Mountbellew to Ballygar, number of trees down but passable

Many other Regional and Local roads are blocked due to fallen trees.

Galway County Council Roads Crews are working to clear trees and debris off the roads but delays can be expected throughout the day. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel as crews work to clear debris and reopen roads.

The ESB has reported that 395,000 premises are out of power. This is a significant event for the ESB and they have reported that this is a multi-day event to bring power back. If the public see lines are down, they should treat them as ‘live’ and report them to the ESB.

The Fire Service nationally took 478 calls overnight, 100 of these were made to the Galway County and City Fire Service.
