Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway County Council has announced that a speed limit of 30 kilometres an hour is to be imposed on a nine kilometre stretch of the N59 road from Oughterard towards Maam Cross.
This is to facilitate road improvement work on a stretch of the N59 which has been described as substandard and dangerous.
Galway County Councils notification of a 50 kilometre speed limit between the Oughterard and Léim area is the first real sign that significant improvements are to be carried out on the N59 in Connemara.
What is termed an overlay job is now planned in two phases; work on a five to six kilometre section from Oughterard heading west is likely to begin in June.
There is a ten kilometre stretch in total involved and it is hoped to complete all of it this year.
This work is seen as a temporary improvement to the N.59.
There is permission from an Bord Pleanála for a total upgrade from Maam Cross to Oughterard but this has been held up on environmental grounds.
The N59 Action Group says the overlay is needed urgently but that a full and proper upgrade has to be done all the way from Oughterard to Clifden and north towards Leenane.
