Six Galway Expressway routes at risk

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Six Bus Eireann Expressway services which serve Galway and some of its main commuter towns are at risk.

There's a warning today that vital inter-city bus routes will close if politicians don't intervene.

Consultants have told Bus Eireann to axe its Expressway service completely.

There are six Expressway services which serve Galway.

These are the 20 and X20 services from Galway to Dublin, the X51 Galway to Limerick route, the 51 Galway to Cork route via Shannon Airport,  the 52 Galway to Ballina via Westport service and the 64 Galway to Derry via Knock Airport.

The consultant report says getting rid of the service which links major towns and cities around the country would be the 'most viable option' financially for Bus Eireann.

The national bus and rail drivers union, the NBRU, is worried about job losses.

Meanwhile, Bus Eireann has issued a statement on the matter.

It says following the consutants' report, the Commercial and Innovation Sub-committee of the Board has been mandated to work with the management team

They will present a change management plan to union representatives over the coming weeks, which must address the competitiveness and efficiency needs of all areas of the business.

Bus Eireann says these are essential to secure the future for the company.

The company says the details of this plan are being finalised and will be presented to staff in due course.
