The Sinn Fein leader says concerns by residents in Oughterard over the direct provision system are legitimate.
Several hundred people have been peacefully picketing at the former Connemara Gateway Hotel, outside the town, since earlier this week, over fears it may be turned into a direct provision centre.
The group argues that Oughterard does not have the infrastructure or services in place to deal with a large influx of asylum seekers to the area.
Mary Lou McDonald argues the direct provision system has been disastrous.
She has also stated that Independent TD Noel Grealish should withdraw alleged controversial comments regarding African migrants while attending a public meeting this week.
