Galway Bay fm newsroom - Minister for Higher Education Simon Harris is being urged to engage with NUI Galway over waiving its 295 euro repeat exam fee.
Galway West TD Mairéad Farrell has written to Minister Harris asking him to request that NUIG follow the lead of other third level institutions like GMIT, UCC and DCU who scrapped their repeat fees this summer.
It comes as NUIG’s Students' Union has been campaigning for the past several weeks to have the fee of €295 removed.
The student representative body says the fee has been used in the past to cover costs such as venues, supervisors and materials.
However, due to Covid-19 restrictions, this year’s repeats were held online and NUIG S.U. claims the new format did not require many of the same costs.
It's launched an online campaign called Hashtag Rip Off NUIG to highlight the issue.
Deputy Farrell says given the current circumstances students cannot be expected to pay the fee.
