Galway Bay fm newsroom - Almost three quarters of a million euro has been allocated to an NUI Galway biomedical engineer to develop a treatment for diabetes.
Dr Eimear Dolan has been granted a University Research Fellow for her research project which aims to reduce foreign body responses to medical implants.
Dr Dolan will develop an approach using soft robotics - which are made from highly compliant material, similar to those in living organisms and are more likely to be accepted by the human body.
She has already developed a soft robotic implant that proves her concept and she will now continue her research for the project at NUI Galway.
Dr Dolan plans to develop her soft robotic implant into a treatment for Type 1 Diabetes.
