Galway Bay fm newsroom - There's been a sharp drop in the number of patients with Covid-19 at UHG.
There are now 13 patients with the virus at the city hospital, including 5 being treated in the ICU.
That's a drop of six patients over the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, there are a further four patients at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, of whom none are in intensive care.
It comes as last evening the Department of Health reported 1,522 new cases of the virus.
The more transmissible Delta variant, which first emerged here earlier this summer, is the dominant strain.
Tomás Ryan, Associate Professor in the School of Biochemistry and Immunology at Trinity College Dublin, says the reopening of schools next month could cause a further rise in case numbers.
