Galway Bay fm newsroom - A masterplan for the Shannon is being unveiled today and includes a major redevelopment of Connacht Harbour in Portumna.
The Shannon tourism masterplan sets out to invest more than €70 million in visitor facilities in the Shannon river region by 2030 and aims to boost visitor numbers by 400,000 over the next 9 years.
The re-development of Connacht Harbour in Portumna would include a significant expansion of the number of mooring berths in the harbour for public use.
There would also be the addition of a canoe step for access to the Lough Derg Blueway; additional onshore facilities such as seating and picnic areas; a new cycle and walking trail linking Connacht Harbour to the town and Lough Derg Blueway.
The masterplan would also provide additional parking facilities to the existing car park and improved visual impact of the harbour by creating a sense of arrival in the town.
The project is led by Waterways Ireland with Fáilte Ireland and 10 Local Authorities along the River Shannon and Shannon-Erne Waterway.
Three key themes are identified in the plan, The Shannon, Mighty River of Ireland, Shannon Journey’s and Adventures and The Natural Timeless Shannon.
