Galway Bay fm newsroom - Traffic on the west side of the city is extremely heavy this afternoon as a result on ongoing roadworks on Mary Street.
The 9am to 5pm works got underway on Monday, but today, the lane closure in the area is leading to significant backlogs.
It's partially due to the presence of a truck delivering supplies to the crews on-site.
The situation is set to be compounded in the coming hours by a state funeral taking place in Renmore this afternoon.
Traffic restrictions will be put in place at the Dublin Road in the city in the next hour.
A State funeral is taking place in the city for an army sergeant who was part of An Chéad Chath at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Renmore.
Lurgan Park resident Steven McColgan, who's originally from Malin in Co Donegal, completed four tours of duty overseas during his 17 year career.
Sergeant Steven McColgan joined the Defence Forces in November 1999 and gave 17 years service to the state, serving in Lebanon, Kosovo and Chad.
His notable achievements included winning numerous Brigade and All-Army titles in shooting, Sniping and mortars.
He also represented the Defence Forces, both as a competitor and as a coach in various international competitions, including Sniper and rifle competitions in the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark and the United States.
Sgt McColgan's funeral mass is getting underway around now at St Oliver Plunkett's Church Renmore.
The army band will then lead a military procession to his final resting place at Bohermore cemetery.
Gardaí say motorists should expect severe traffic disruptions between 1pm and 1.15 on the Dublin Road, as the funeral procession leaves the church.
All traffic from the Bon Secours Hospital to the Moneenageisha junction will be stopped from around 1pm, and rolling closures will facilitate the funeral's journey to Bohermore cemetery.
Gardaí say traffic is expected to return to normal by around 2.15 this afternoon.
