Seven Galway Gardaí injured after assaults while on duty last year

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Seven Gardaí in the Galway division were injured after being assaulted while on duty last year.

243 Gardaí nationwide received injuries while on duty in 2021.

According to freedom of information figures, it’s a 9% increase on 2020.

223 Gardaí got occupational injuries after being assaulted in 2020 – rising to 243 in 2021.

Of last year’s figures, 22 involved bone fractures or dislocations, and 15 were open wounds.

Four members received multiple injuries, which were serious.

Criminal barrister and Fine Gael senator, Barry Ward, says a Bill is currently going through the Oireachtas to address the issue.

58 of last year’s assaults were in Dublin, with 27 in Cork, 17 in Tipperary, and 16 in Limerick.
