Seanad seat left vacant by Galway senator could go to anti-Brexit campaigner

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael could reach a deal about filling two vacant Seanad seats, one of which has been vacated by former Sinn Féin Galway senator, Trevor O' Clochartaigh.

Trevor left the Sinn Féin party last year, over an internal row, becoming an Independent senator for a time.

Trevor O' Clochartaigh recently announced that he is resigning from the Seanad to take up the role of communications manager with TG4.

The second Seanad seat is vacant as a result of Labour's Denis Landy resigning on health grounds.

According to today's Irish Times, it's unlikely that Labour and Sinn Fein will be able to retain the seats in a bye-election as they don't have the numbers in the Oireachtas.

It's understood Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has approached former President of the Ulster Farmer's Union and anti-Brexit campaigner, Ian Marshall, about taking Trevor O' Clochartaigh's Seanad seat.

Ian Marshall works in Queen's University Belfast in the Institute for Global Food Security.

There are reports that he will secure the Fine Gael party nomination with a possible agreement with Fianna Fáil for the second seat.
