Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Saolta Hospital Group is to submit its response next week to a further information request regarding the long awaited modular theatres at Merlin Park Hospital.
It’s been three years since a leak in the roof caused a theatre closure.
One theatre is now in operation which has led to reduced capacity for orthopaedic elective surgery.
Galway City Council has raised concerns about the ecological impact that the modular build development could have on Merlin Woods and has sought further information.
The project has faced various setbacks after the HSE confirmed in March that it had terminated its letter of intent to the provider of the orthopaedic surgery theatres at Merlin Park.
At this week's Health Forum meeting, Joe Hoare of Estates West said that an approach to lease the facility and put in a solution didn’t work out and a different approach is now being pursued based on a ‘systems build or rapid build’ capital project approach.
The meeting heard this would involve a combination of off-site and on-site with the foundations built on-site and the structure off-site.
Mr. Hoare said it’s estimated that the main contract itself won’t start until sometime into next year.
