Saolta Hospital Chief highlights increase in hospitalisations across West due to COVID 19

Across the West there are 35 patients being treated in hospitals across the six sites of the Saolta hospital group.

10 of there patients are being treated in UHG, two in Portiuncula in Ballinasloe and five in Mayo with the remainder receiving care at Letterkenny and Sligo hospitals.

Nationwide, 214 COVID-19 patients are attending acute hospitals today, while a further 100 hospital patients are awaiting a test result of the virus.

30 patients are receiving care for the illness in Irish ICUs today - with 21 patients being treated on ventilators.

Nine facilities don't have an available bed including at hospitals in Dublin, Cork and in the midlands.

It comes as 50 new cases of the virus were recorded in Galway last evening, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the county to 1,162.

Chief Executive of the Saolta group Tony Canavan says the hospital admission trends are changing in recent days due to the rise in cases of the virus in the community across the west.
