Rosscahill native and Ireland's oldest man dies aged 108

Ireland's oldest man and Rosscahill native Martin McEvilly has died at the age of 108.

Martin was born in July 1916, just a few months after the Easter Rising.

He was the youngest of 11 siblings, and many of his brothers and sisters lived into their nineties.

He's fondly described as a man passionate about faith, family, and politics - and one who wasn't afraid of hard work.

After leaving school at 15, Martin worked for the Land Commission, the Corrib Drainage Scheme, and Maddens Garden Centre - and also managed the family farm.

He was an avid cyclist - commonly seen on his bicycle until he was 99 years old - as well as a keen traveller, who visited the US and Australia well into his 80s.

Martin is predeceased by his wife Kathleen, who he married in 1946, and who died at the age of 97 three years ago.

They had seven children together - Madge, Mary, Noranne, Michael, Christina, Pat and John.
