Galway Bay fm newsroom - Roscommon/Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called for more support for the beef sector which is coming under increasing pressure following McDonald's decision to close all its restaurants in Ireland due to the pandemic.
The fast food chain says it's become clear they can't maintain safe social distancing, even operating takeaway only, with every restaurant in the chain shutting temporarily at seven o'clock tonight.
Independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice says the fast-food chain is a major buyer of Irish beef - purchasing on average of up to 3,000 cattle per week, depending on cut.
He argues the Government needs to revisit the Beam Scheme to support farmers.
The Beam Scheme is paid on adult cattle slaughtered between 24th of September 2018 and 12th May 2019, at a rate of one hundred euro per animal.
