Galway Bay fm newsroom - Roscommon/Galway TD Denis Naughten says a system must be put in place to facilitate marts located in areas with poor broadband.
The Independent TD says latest government data shows 40% of marts have been noted as having poor broadband.
According to the Government's broadband webpage, 68 marts are identified and 19 of those are included in the National Broadband Plan to have their service upgraded.
Deputy Naughten argues the Department of Agriculture needs to ease restrictions on marts given the significant broadband challenges faced by many such facilities nationwide.
It comes as a number of marts were cancelled on one day last month when an online sales system crashed.
Deputy Naughten argues the Agriculture Minister and mart operators need to put a sustainable and robust sales system in place which takes into account the poor broadband connectivity in some locations.
He says flexibility is also needed to allow some buyers into the sales ring in a socially distant manner.
