Galway Bay fm newsroom - An upgrade of the N59 between Maam Cross and Clifden may not be viable according to the roads authorities.
In a letter to the N59 Action Group, the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, said he had news from the National Roads Design team that the situation would be assessed but that a question mark hung over the project.
Seosamh Ó Cuaig and Josie Conneely who founded the N59 Action Group have said any suggestion that no upgrade could be attempted on the N59 road west of Maam Cross is a disastrous prospect for the people of Connemara.
In a letter to the Action Group, Transport Minister Shane Ross said the roads authorities told him they will re-examine the Maam Cross to Clifden project when they have resources and see whether a viable scheme is possible.
Seosamh Ó Cuaig and Josie Conneely said this information coming to the Minister from the roads authorities suggest that it may not be possible to do any worthwhile upgrade west of Maam Cross.
The first planning application was rejected on environmental grounds.
“It has to be viable for the good of the people of Connemara - and that is the first consideration”, Ó Cuaig said.
Meanwhile, Minister Ross said he would try to see the N. 59 himself soon.
