RNLI award for gallantry returned to Aran Islands

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Aran Islands branch of the RNLI has been presented with an historic citation on vellum of a medal for gallantry which dates back to 1938.

The unique award was originally presented to RNLI bowman Patrick Flaherty for his part in a daring rescue of 12 people from a Greek freighter almost 80 years ago.

The steam trawler called 'Nogi' had run aground near Straw Island Lighthouse in heavy seas.

Patrick Flaherty's grandnephew John Harwood made the presentation to Galway RNLI at a special ceremony in Rossaveal this week.

He has travelled to the West of Ireland from the UK with his wife for the occasion and says the citation is now in its rightful home.
