Galway Bay fm newsroom - Retired Bishop of Galway Martin Drennan will later today receive the remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey at Galway Cathedral
Large crowds and some traffic disruption are expected at the Cathedral from around 6.30 this evening ahead of the 7 o clock ceremony and again tomorrow from 1.30 ahead of the 2pm concelebrated funeral mass
Bishop Casey's remains will arrive at the main door of Galway Cathedral at 7 this evening.
The coffin will then be taken to lie before the main altar of the cathedral by twelve family members.
A brief liturgy will follow which will include a scripture reading and psalm read by Helen Clifford, a niece of Bishop Casey.
It is not expected that Bishop Drennan will preach at this evening's ceremony
The Funeral Mass for the late Bishop Casey will be celebrated tomorrow at 2
Bishop Casey resigned as Bishop of Galway in May, 1992 following disclosures that in 1974, as Bishop of Kerry, he fathered a son, Peter.
Subsequently Bishop Casey worked as a missionary priest with the Society of Saint James in Ecuador until 1998 when he returned to parish ministry in the Diocese or Arundel and Brighton in the south of England.
In 2006 he came home to live in Shanaglish, near Gort and later at Carrigoran Nursing Home in Co Clare in 2011 where he died peacefully on Monday
Despite the controversies Bishop Casey is still mainly held in warm regard by the people of Galway, and tomorrow the 89 year old will be laid to rest in the crypt underneath Galway Cathedral.
