Galway Bay fm newsroom - Local authority tenants should not be penalised for delays in a rent review carried out by the city council last year.
Independent Councillor Mike Cubbard says tenants have received letters from the council advising them that large amount of arrears are due following a rent review.
More than 300 tenants have been told that their account is in arrears of more than 1 thousand euro.
This is because of a delay in the process of carrying out the rent review, because of a shortage of staff in the Housing Department of the city council.
The Independent councillor says this impacts on people who are hoping to buy the houses under the Tenant Purchase Scheme as there are now arrears on their accounts.
Councillor Cubbard says it's not fair that tenants are punished for a delay on the local authority's part.
