Report to come before county councillors in September on increased powers for municipal districts

Galway Bay fm newsroom - County officials are to bring a report to councillors in September on proposals to give additional functions to municipal districts.

Concerns have been raised countywide that many functions can only be dealt with at plenary council with calls for more powers to be devolved at local municipal district level.

CEO Kevin Kelly told this week’s meeting at County Hall that the matter has been discussed at corporate policy group level and would give additional functions to Municipal Districts on a phased basis.

Mr Kelly said this would start with areas such as local area plans and Part 8 applications.

Councillors will be briefed on the matter at their next meeting in September.
