Report shows Galway as most non-religious city in country

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway is the most non-religious city in the country.

That's according to a report examining Census data from 2006 to 2016.

The findings compiled by the Irish Independent finds that over 16 percent of Galway city's population reported having no religion- that's higher than any other city in the country.

The number of residents in the city professing to have no faith has increased by 137 percent since 2006 - a rise of almost 7500 people.

Waterford city reported the lowest rate of non-religious residents at just over 10 percent.

The analysis examing Ireland's religious beliefs shows that almost 10 percent of the population report having no faith.

This is an increase of 150 percent since 2006.

The findings show 169 towns reported a rise in the number of non-religious figures with the biggest jump in Rathangan, Kildare- increasing by 160 people since a decade ago.

However, the data also reveals that Roman Catholicism remains the domaint religion in Ireland with over 78 percent of the population professing to be a member of the faith.
