Report finds number of ghost estates in city unchanged in last year

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A report has found that Galway city has not reduced its number of ghost estates in the last year.

While in the county, there has been an almost 29 percent reduction in the volume of unfinished developments from 2015 to 2016.

Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal Damien English has published the fifth annual progress report and seventh housing survey on tackling the issue of unfinished housing developments nationwide.

It records an 85 percent drop in the number of unfinished developments since 2010 from nearly 3000 to 420.

248 developments were described as resolved in 2016.

The report finds that South Dublin was one of the only local authorities nationwide to have no unresolved development in 2016, down from 12 the year before.

In Galway city, three estates are listed as remaining unfinished, while in the county, there are 15.

The study records 25 vacant unfinished units in the city and a further 117 in the county.

For the year ahead, a focus will be placed on on resolving all remaining unfinished housing developments in high market demand locations such as Galway city, Dublin city, Cork and Waterford cities.
