Galway Bay fm newsroom - A new report has found that NUI Galway has among the lowest rates of students from disadvantaged backgrounds nationwide.
Data from the Higher Education Authority shows 8% of NUIG students are from disadvantaged areas, while GMIT's rate stands at 12%.
Nationwide, 10 percent of third-level students are from disadvantaged backgrounds, while Letterkenny IT has the highest proportion of students from disadvantaged areas.
The HEA report shows Trinity College Dublin has the highest number of students from affluent areas at 36% - that's compared to 14% at NUIG and 8% at GMIT.
Finance and medicine are the courses most likely to include affluent students, while childcare and sports related courses have a greater level of students from disadvantaged students.
