Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway's population is now only 59 percent of what it was in 1841.
That's according to a report by the Western Development Commission which examines CSO census data.
The population of Galway in Census 2016 was just over 258 thousand.
The report finds 54% of people in Galway live in rural areas, while 61 percent of the working age population is in the labour force.
In the city, the average time it takes to travel to work was recorded at 21 minutes, while county commuters recorded an average time of 29 minutes.
45 percent of Galway's population have a third level qualification, 5 percent work in agriculture, and almost 16 percent work in industry.
14 percent of Galway's population is aged over 65, while almost 21 percent is aged under 15.
The figures also reveal almost 59 percent of Galway's residents consider themselves to be in very good health.
