Galway Bay fm newsroom - More public meetings will take place in the coming weeks over the future of the Westwood Hotel in Newcastle.
Last night more than 100 local residents attended a meeting at the hotel to discuss the proposal for high-end student accommodation on the site of the hotel.
The Westwood Hotel has been sold but will continue to operate fully until January next year.
A residents' meeting which had been booked for a function room at the hotel last night was cancelled by the new owners but went ahead in a smaller room at the hotel.
A committee involving representatives from various residents' associations in the Dangan and Newcastle areas has been set up.
Residents will have the opportunity to object to the plans once the proposal is formally lodged to the planning department of the city council.
Councillor Ollie Crowe told Keith Finnegan that there are serious concerns in the area about the planned student accommodation.
