Public meeting in Oughterard to discuss concerns about potential asylum centre

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A public meeting will take place next week to discuss concerns about the future of a former hotel in the Oughterard area.

Local Councillor Tom Welby says works have been taking place recently at the former Connemara Gateway Hotel.

At the same time, a tender process has been ongoing to find locations for new asylum seeker centres in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.

The tender process is being spearheaded by the Department of Justice.

The Independent councillor says people in the area don't know if the search for locations for asylum centres is related to the work which is underway at the hotel.

Councillors and TDs have been called to a public meeting on the matter at the Boat Inn in Oughterard next Wednesday, September 11th at 8p.m.
