Public health alert for possible exposure to measles at UHG

There’s a public health alert for possible exposure to measles at University Hospital Galway

It concerns anybody attending the Emergency Department last weekend

The exact period covers 9 on Sunday night last and 5 on Monday evening

The alert follows the HSE being notified on Wednesday of a second case of confirmed measles in Ireland, based in the West.

The HSE says if you were born in Ireland before 1978, or had the measles, or received two MMR vaccines, you are probably immune.

They are asking those not immune to be particularly vigilant for symptoms for 21 days from exposure.

Symptoms include runny nose, sneezing, a cough and a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius or above

Other symptoms include sore red eyes and a rash, which usually appears on the head and neck first and spreads to the rest of the body

Anyone developing these symptoms is asked to seek medical advice and to phone ahead prior to help prevent potential further spread
