Protestors to gather at County Hall in call against proposals for mineral mining in Connemara

Galway Bay fm newsroom:

Protestors are to gather at County Hall on Friday (16th) to highlight their opposition to plans for mineral mining in Connemara.

Canadian mining company MOAG is seeking a licence for prospecting in town lands such as Ballinahinch, Callow, Murvey and Dolan.

Another firm, BTU Metals Corp is seeking a prospecting licence from the government and public submissions are due by August 25th.

A public meeting held earlier this month called on Minister Kyne to approach his government colleagues to deny the prospecting licence and block mining in Connemara.

Rural campaign group Glor na Tuaithe is to hold a demonstration at County Hall at midday on Friday.

Group spokesperson is Padraic Connolly – he says locals are concerned over the health impacts and the potential damage to the environment.
