Protest at Renmore barracks over hardship faced by Defence Forces staff

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Protestors have gathered at Renmore Barracks this lunchtime.

Members of the 'Wives and Partners of the Defence Forces' group are holding demonstrations outside barracks across the country today, on behalf of their partners who are not allowed to protest.

Wives and partners of the defence forces claim one in five personnel relies on social welfare payments to make ends meet.

They're looking for better pay and conditions and say they're the only public servants who don't have access to the Workplace Relations Commission.

A city councillor has written to the Taoiseach, who is also the Minister for Defence, asking that he explore the possibility of providing accommodation for soldiers' families at the barracks in Renmore.

Councillor Mike Cubbard says that many young soldiers with young families are under extreme pressure for housing.

The Independent councillor says new entrants to the Defence Forces, do not receive substantial wages and often can't afford expensive rents or find landlords who are part of the Housing Assistance Programme, HAP.

Councillor Cubbard says accommodation is provided at army bases such as The Curragh, so the same should be provided at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa in Renmore.
