Galway Bay fm newsroom - Progress is finally being made on flood mitigation works at Kiltiernan National School on the N18.
Kiltiernan and the surrounding area has been affected by major flooding in recent years, and has been the subject of a local campaign spanning two decades.
At a public meeting held in Kiltiernan National School in 2015, then-OPW Minister Simon Harris confirmed his office would provide a quarter of a million euro for the works.
The entire project is expected to cost in the region of 375 thousand euro, with the remainder already sanctioned by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.
However, despite funding being secured, no work has yet been carried out on the ground.
The county council says an appropriate assessment is currently being carried out on the project in a bid to avoid delays which could be experienced if the scheme went through An Bord Pleanala.
The council executive says the scheme is unique, as it involves moving water from one protected turlough to another.
A report on the matter is due before Loughrea area councillors next month.
