Galway Bay fm newsroom - There's considerable pressure on bed availability at UHG due to high numbers of COVID-19 patients.
There are currently 57 patients with the virus at the city hospital - the highest figure in the country.
There are currently two dedicated COVID care wards at UHG, but a further five wards are now affected by outbreaks.
Two of those wards have been closed to admissions.
The situation is limiting the availability of beds for patients coming in through the emergency department, which is experiencing long waiting times.
There's 57 people on trolleys at the ED today - the second highest figure nationwide.
In addition, some elective procedures at UHG have been cancelled and patients have been contacted directly.
