Galway Bay fm newsroom - Pregnant women across Galway will soon be denied access to anomaly scans which are used to identify major or life-threatening problems in unborn babies.
The scans are usually carried out at around 22 weeks.
However, they're being cut back at UHG because of a lack of resources.
In a statement to Galway Bay fm news, the HSE says due to staffing challenges, it's been unable to maintain the current service.
It's admitted that the availability of the scans may have to be reduced if the staffing problems cannot be resolved.
However, dating scans, emergency scans and early pregnancy assessment scans will continue to be scheduled as normal.
Nationally, anomaly scans are only offered in around 7 of the country's 19 maternity hospitals.
