Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Galway City Transport Strategy, which aims to solve Galway's chronic traffic problems, has been extended.
The scheme boundary has been extended to include the area from the city to Salthill Village.
The preferred option for the strategy is due to be published in the coming months, and will include changes based on signage data, aerial photography and engineering reports.
The strategy is made up of three key elements - a city centre access network, an inner city access route and a bus only route.
The city centre access network is an orbital route designed to enhance flow around the city centre area.
The inner city route would link Lough Atalia road to the N6 via Fairgreen Road, Prospect Hill and Headford Road, providing access to the core city centre and car parks.
The cross city link is designed as a central route for public transport, cyclists and pedestrians servicing the main city centre, as well as the main hotels and B&Bs.
It'd also include restrictions on non-essential car traffic within the city centre.
The strategy also aims to prioritise public transport and taxis travelling over the Salmon Weir Bridge, by restricting general traffic access at specific times.
The emerging preferred option for the scheme is due to be determined this Spring following ongoing engagement with stakeholders.
