It's understood they were siblings who were holidaying in the Ballybunion area - but the man was living in Roscommon, while his sister had an address in Sweden.

The alarm was raised just after 6 o'clock yesterday evening - after the man, who was 50 years old, was spotted in difficulty in the sea off Mans beach.

The woman, aged in her 60's, was found in the water during a follow up search - and she was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Local Sinn Féin Councillor Robert Beasley, who was on the beach yesterday evening, describes the conditions at the time.
