Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Port of Galway has welcomed progress on its application for the proposed extension of Galway Harbour.
It follows the completion of a 'Statement of Case' by An Bord Pleanála on the strategic infrastructure application.
The Board has stated that the proposed development should be given consent for imperative reasons of overriding public interest or IROPI.
It's considered the proposal presents an integrated development that enhances the social, economic and recreational benefits of the Port for the wider benefit of the population of Galway and its regional hinterland.
It's further stated that the enhancement of port facilities aligns with the European transportation policy promoting 'short-sea shipping' as a cost effective and environmentally sustainable alternative to road transport.
The Board has also concluded the Port and the tradition of maritime trade is fundamental not just to the economy of Galway but also to its culture and identity.
Conor O'Dowd is CEO of the Port of Galway and says it's a positive further step forward in the planning process.
